As a UX designer, soft skills are as important as the hard skills because they are what helps to provide the experience the user has.

First, we define what User-Experience (UX) and what User-Experience Design (UXD) is. They may seem like the same thing but they are quite different. They are related but should not be misunderstood.

What is UX?

User Experience describes all the interactions and experiences a customer has with a company’s product or services.

What is UXD?

User Experience Design is the process design teams take to create products and services that provide a significant, lasting and germane experience to users. This process includes designing the entire steps a user goes through from getting to owning and even using a product or service from a company.

UX Design is involved in all aspects of design, branding, usability and functionality of a product, so long as a user would use it, UX is involved.

As a UX designer, it is your job to ensure all points of contact during the use of a product or service are easy and enjoyable. With every design, your aim is to improve the satisfaction a user gets from a product by making its usable, accessible, and its interaction better.

There are a couple of UX skills needed by a designer including applied skills like wireframing, graphics design, prototyping, research, etc. but soft skills are also as important. Here’s a list of some soft skills every designer should have:

1. Empathy soft skill for UX design:

Empathy is an important soft skill for UX design.

It is the ability to understand and feel the emotions of another person. UX emphasizes a positive customer experience, so you need to learn about the people who would use the product or service and their inclinations.

This would help create a design that users would be delighted about and engage with.

2.Curiosity

Curiosity leads to asking intuitive questions, active listening and committing more deeply to solving a problem.

Curiosity gives the ability to engage clients, products and challenges in meaningful ways. UX is a consistently changing field so developing a sense of curiosity is an important soft skill UX designers should have.

3. Collaboration:

Collaboration is an important soft skill of UX design.

Good UX means combining the ideas of developers, clients and team members. To do this, you would have to collaborate with different teams on a daily basis.

UX designers give and receive feedback and incorporate the expertise and needs of everyone involved in a project to create the best possible product. Collaboration is thus one of the important soft skills a UX designer cannot do without.

4.Adaptability:

Each project brings new challenges that may not be planned for. Since it’s impossible to know every problem, you can devise a method on how you plan to solve them. Being a UX designer means that you’d need to be versatile and adapt to a range of changes. As the need changes the design has to evolve.

5. Passionate

UX design is a very fun process; though it might seem tedious to you if you do not have a passion for it. It takes a lot of creativity and patience to craft the right solution to a problem. If you don’t have a passion for creating solutions or solving problems, then UX design might not be for you.

Passion makes a designer go the extra mile while trying to create.
